The fifth annual International Úbeda Film Music Festival was held in the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site of Úbeda, Spain in mid-July. This four-day celebration of film scoring included both a recital and orchestral concert featuring the music of several ASCAP composers, along with members of European societies. The Honorary President of this year's festival was PRS composer Patrick Doyle (Sense & Sensibility, Hamlet, Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire).
The concert also included a tribute to the late, great Georges Delerue (A Little Romance, Platoon), whose widow Collette was in attendance. Michael Giacchino (Star Trek, Ratatouille) presented a suite of his Emmy-winning music from TV's hit series, Lost, along with music from recent film scores, including Cloverfield and Up. Also featured were works by SACEM composer Philippe Rombi (Un Homme Et Son Chien) and SGAE composers Roque Baños (Torrente) and Fernando Velázquez (El Hombre Esponja). All of the visiting composers participated in an all-day autograph-signing session to the delight of the hundreds of film music fans from throughout Europe.
Closing out the Úbeda Festival were the 2009 GoldSpirit Awards, held on July 18th. The GoldSpirit Awards honor achievements in the soundtrack and film music world, and are determined by readers of the Spanish film music website BSOSpirit.com.
As in years past, ASCAP composers and international affiliates dominated the GoldSpirit Awards. Out of the nineteen GoldSpirits granted this year, fourteen were given to ASCAP members or international composers who license their music through ASCAP. Among the top winners was Michael Giacchino, whose music for Lost Season 4 was honored as Best TV Score, and whose cue "Roar!" from Cloverfield was named Composition of the Year. Roque Baños also earned multiple honors, including the Spanish Composer of the Year award.
2009 marked the 5th anniversary of the GoldSpirit Awards, and to mark the occasion they gave out two special distinctions representing achievement during the entire five-year span of the Awards: Best Composer and Best Score. Both awards went to James Newton Howard.
