President Barack Obama presented the National Medal of Arts to ASCAP members: actor/director/composer Clint Eastwood and conductor/composer Michael Tilson Thomas.

Clint Eastwood received the honor for “his artistry as a director and actor.  His films and performances are essays in individuality, hard truths, and the essence of what it means to be American.”

Michael Tilson Thomas received the honor for his dedication to elevating American orchestral playing as a renowned conductor, and for his commitment to engaging new artists and audiences in the exciting world of contemporary music.

The National Medal of Arts, established by Congress in 1984, is awarded by the President and managed by the National Endowment for the Arts. Award recipients are selected based on their contributions to the creation, growth, and support of the arts in the United States.
