Production duo, The Remedy (Marco and Jodd), talks to “On the Come Up” about why their work is so elevated

What was your inspiration for “ Super High” by Rick Ross?

The Remedy: The sound of 70's soul music blended with the great Hip Hop records of the 90's. We wanted to produce a great record that captured a live feel. There aren't many Hip Hop records out, now, that capture the essence of live musicianship. We aimed to incorporate an element that we feel sets us apart from other producers.

What are you working on, currently?

TR: Melanie Fiona, Outasight, and Joell Ortiz – just to name few.

Where are you from, originally?

Marco : My family is from Panama & Venezuela. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. I'll never leave...well, maybe, one day.

Jodd : My family is from St. Vincent, a small island in the Caribbean. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, where I reside, currently.

Who is your musical mentor and why?

Marco : My mom sang in the choir. My dad was the choir director and wrote gospel songs. I get my ability from both of them. My mom also played viola, violin, and cello in high school. She had me listening to the Yellow Magic Orchestra, The B-52s, and Queen, while growing up. My dad put me onto gospel and soul music. I think this variety gave me my musical ear.

Jodd : My father, Peter Knight, has had the greatest musical influence on me. As a jazz guitarist, he taught me piano, at a very young age. And he helped me develop a very strong musical ear. I'd also like to give credit to some of my past teachers, including my high school music teacher, Gladys Byrd and my college professor, Andrew Tomasello. They were a major part in my pursuit of a career in music. Marco and I agree that the WBMB radio staff at Baruch College played a major role in the “birth” of “The Remedy.”  We're forever grateful to people, like Alex Estevez and Shawn Bacot for introducing us to production. Audio engineer, Fran Cathcart and engineer/artist, Jaquan Williams both played an important role in lending their ears to the technical side of production and mixing. Most recently, DJ Clark Kent has been a tremendous source of guidance for us. Finally, our label owner/manager, Jonathan “Brooklyn Johnny” Descartes has been a great source of inspiration and an unbelievable mentor for us. We're thankful that he believed in us and has stood by us from the very beginning.

What was your first introduction into the music industry?

Marco : Working as a session musician, playing drums and/or keys for singer/songwriter, Andrea Martin.

Jodd : Doing work as a session keyboardist for Andrea Martin. Also, interning at various recording studios, including Fran Cathcart's, “EastSide Sound” and Diddy's, “Daddy's House.”
